SC's Green competing in USA nationals

Travis Green, a senior at South Charleston High, is competing in the USA Swimming Short Course national championships Thursday through Saturday in Atlanta.

Green, a four-time state champion and two-time prep All-American, has qualified in the 500- and 1,650-yard freestyle events. He signed a grant-in-aid with Kentucky last month.

Also competing at the national championships will be several members of the 2008 U.S. Olympic swim team who competed in Beijing in August.

Former GW standout hired at Purdue

Shawn Clark, a former football standout at George Washington and Charleston native, was hired at Purdue as offensive line coach. Danny Hope, who succeeds Boilermakers coach Joe Tiller after this season, announced the hiring Monday.

Clark, a two-time All-American at Appalachian State, was the offensive line coach at Eastern Kentucky from 2003-08 where he worked under Hope. Clark was also a graduate assistant at Louisville in 2001-02.

Royals sign J.R. House

The Kansas City Royals have signed catcher J.R. House, once a top prospect for the Pittsburgh Pirates , to a minor league contract.

House, 29, a former Nitro athlete who also plays first base, last season batted .306 with 18 home runs and 60 RBIs for Class AAA Round Rock in the Houston organization. He quarterbacked Nitro to the state Class AAA football title in 1998.

Asbury Week 14 winner

Timmy Asbury of Nitro won $100 in Week 14 of the Gazette Gridiron Gold Mine by correctly picking 14 of 15 football games.

Asbury tied with George Evans of LaFollette, Tenn., who also had 14 wins and the same amount of points in the tiebreaker. Asbury won in a random drawing. He now becomes eligible for the $1,000 grand prize in the season-ending championship.
