Royals-Orioles Preview 2008-07-01

Royals-Orioles Preview 2008-07-01
The last time the Kansas City Royals won seven consecutive road games, they were considered pennant contenders.

They hope matching that impressive run can help keep them out of last place in the AL Central on Tuesday night when they continue their four-game series against the Baltimore Orioles.

The Royals (38-45) extended their road winning streak to six games on Monday, rallying from a four-run deficit and getting the go-ahead run on Jose Guillen's single in the 11th inning in a 6-5 victory.

"That's what we've been doing lately. We get down, we don't quit and we come back," Royals starter Zack Greinke said.

Kansas City hasn't won seven consecutive road games since Aug. 15-Sept. 1, 1989, when it finished with the second-best record in the league at 92-70. The team hasn't come close to that type of success since, finishing above .500 only four times.

The Royals are now fourth in the division, 9 1-2 games behind division-leading Chicago and only one better than last-place Cleveland.

Their current run on the road has been spurred by a .306 batting average and nine homers, while the pitchers have combined for a 2.25 ERA. The bullpen has been key during the stretch, allowing six hits in 15 2-3 scoreless innings - including three hits in six innings in Monday's series opener.

The Royals will turn to Luke Hochevar (5-5, 4.60 ERA), who is 2-0 with a 3.51 ERA in his last four starts, helping Kansas City to victories in three of them. That solid stretch has come after the right-hander went 0-3 with a 6.65 ERA in four games - all Kansas City losses.

Hochevar's last outing was perhaps his best of the year, allowing two runs and seven hits in a career-high eight innings of a 4-2 win over Colorado.

Hochevar lost his only game against the Orioles (41-40) on May 8, giving up four runs and five hits in seven innings of the 4-1 defeat.

The Orioles will give the ball to Radhames Liz (2-0, 5.70 ERA), who is looking to build on a winning performance as he faces Kansas City for the first time.

The right-hander, who entered the rotation after being recalled from Triple-A Norfolk on June 2, allowed two runs and four hits in five innings of an 11-4 road win over the Chicago Cubs on Thursday. That outing came six days after Liz gave up five runs, two homers and four walks in two innings of an 8-5 win at Milwaukee.

"He's young and has got a very good arm," Orioles manager Dave Trembley said. "I think there are moments where he will show you just what he's all about. The main thing about him is he's got a lot of poise. He'll keep coming at you with his fastball. He's not afraid to throw it."

Baltimore hopes George Sherrill can rebound from a pair of difficult outings. The closer, who is second in the AL with 26 saves, is 0-1 while allowing three runs and two hits - both homers - in blowing save chances in the last two games. He served up a pinch-hit homer to Miguel Olivo in the top of the ninth Monday, forcing extra innings.
