Kansas City Royals Roster Report 2009-05-14

Kansas City Royals Roster Report 2009-05-14
--RHP Luke Hochevar will remain in the rotation and start Sunday against the Orioles, manager Trey Hillman said. Hochevar, who was 5-0 with a 0.90 ERA with Class AAA Omaha, gave up eight runs in two innings in a Tuesday loss at Oakland.

--RHP Doug Waechter, who is on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right elbow, had a setback while on a minor league rehab assignment. Waechter suffered a strained oblique while playing catch with Class AAA Omaha. He has returned to Kansas City to continue rehabbing. A player with an oblique injury is normally out four to six weeks. Waechter went on the disabled list April 21.

--C Miguel Olivo's run-producing single in the second inning Wednesday extended his hitting streak to eight games. That is the second-longest active streak in the American League.

--Minor league RHP Eric Basurto was acquired from the Marlins as the player to be named in the April 1 trade for INF/OF Ross Gload. Basurto, 23, was a 33rd-round pick in 2006 of the Marlins. He was 1-2 with a 1.64 ERA in 25 appearances with low Class A Greensboro last year. He was assigned to the Royals' short-season Idaho Falls club.

MEDICAL WATCH:

RHP Brian Bannister (stiff right shoulder) left the May 13 game. His status for his next start was uncertain.

RHP Joakim Soria (stiff right shoulder) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to May 8.

SS Tony Pena Jr. (fractured hamate bone in left hand) went on the 15-day disabled list May 3. He had surgery May 5, and he is expected to miss four to six weeks.

RHP Doug Waechter (right elbow strain) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to April 18. He began a minor league rehab assignment May 4, but he suffered a strained oblique muscle in mid-May, halting his recovery.

LHP John Bale (thyroid surgery on March 3) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 27. He pitched in extended spring training on April 22, and he began a rehab assignment with Class AA Northwest Arkansas on May 6.

3B Alex Gordon (torn cartilage in right hip) went on the 15-day disabled list April 15. He had surgery April 16 and could be out until the All-Star break.
