Kansas City Royals Roster Report 2009-05-06
Backup SS Tony Pena Jr., who was 0-for-11, was placed on the 15-day disabled list Sunday with a fractured left hamate bone. INF Luis Hernandez had his contract purchased from Class AAA Omaha, where he was hitting .292. RHP Doug Waechter, who is on the DL with a strained right elbow, will likely begin a minor league rehab assignment this week after a couple of good bullpen sessions.

PLAYER NEWS:

--SS Tony Pena Jr. underwent surgery Tuesday on a fractured hamate bone in his left hand, which he injured fouling off a pitch in the 10th inning Saturday at Minnesota. General manager Dayton Moore said he expects Pena would be out six to eight weeks. "I've got to believe that if he heals up the way that we hope he will, hopefully it doesn't run into a two-month ordeal," Royals manager Trey Hillman said. "Hopefully, it's the four to six (weeks) and we can get him back." Pena is on the 15-day disabled list.

--C Brayan Pena, who was designated for assignment on April 25 when RF Jose Guillen came off the disabled list, cleared waivers and has been outrighted to Class AAA Omaha. Pena hit .286 with two doubles and an RBI in four games. "That's unfortunate for Brayan personally, but I'm glad we've still got him," manager Trey Hillman said of Pena clearing waivers. "There are a lot of things about Brayan I like -- his energy, the improvement I saw defensively in spring training, and he got in two big ballgames for us and did well."

--2B Alberto Callaspo homered in the third inning Tuesday and has hit safely in seven straight and in 20 of his past 22 games. After going 441 at-bats without a home run, the longest among active players in the majors, before his April 24 home run, Callaspo had to go only 39 at-bats before his second career home run.

--C John Buck's game-winning single in the 11th inning Tuesday came with the bases loaded. It was the Royals' first hit this season in 11 at-bats with two out and the bases loaded.
