Backup SS Tony Pena Jr., who was 0-for-11, was placed on the 15-day disabled list Sunday with a fractured left hamate bone. IF Luis Hernandez had his contract purchased from Class AAA Omaha, where he was hitting .292. RHP Doug Waechter, who is on the DL with a strained right elbow, will likely begin a minor league rehab assignment this week after a couple of good bullpen sessions.

PLAYER NEWS:

--RHP Doug Waechter, on the disabled list with a strained right elbow, began his minor-league rehab assignment Monday with Class AAA Omaha. He threw 17 pitches, 11 for strikes, in a scoreless inning against Memphis, allowing two hits and walking one.

--LF David DeJesus extended his hitting streak to five games with a home run in the third. He is hitting .429 (9-for-21) in the streak. His home run was his first at Kauffman Stadium since Sept. 20, 2008, also against the White Sox.

--2B Alberto Callaspo went 1-for-3 and received an intentional walk. Callaspo has hit in 21-of-24 games he has appeared in this season. He is hitting .409 in a six-game hitting streak.

--LHP John Bale will begin his minor-league injury rehab assignment Tuesday with Class AA Northwest Arkansas. Bale is on the disabled list after having thyroid surgery in March.

MEDICAL WATCH:

RHP Gil Meche (lower back stiffness) left the April 28 game. He should be able to make his next start May 3.

RHP Joakim Soria (sore right shoulder) didn't pitch April 23-May 1. He returned to action May 2.

RHP Doug Waechter (right elbow strain) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to April 18. He began a minor league rehab assignment May 4.

3B Alex Gordon (torn cartilage in right hip) went on the 15-day disabled list April 15. He had surgery April 16 and could be out until the All-Star break.

LHP John Bale (thyroid surgery on March 3) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 27. He pitched in extended spring training on April 22, and he was scheduled to begin a minor league rehab assignment May 5.
