Kansas City Royals Roster Report 2009-04-25

Kansas City Royals Roster Report 2009-04-25
With 3B Alex Gordon out for 10 to 12 weeks after having hip surgery, Mark Teahen will get the majority of the playing time at third base. Teahen came up as a third baseman, but shifted to the outfield to make room for Gordon, who was the second player picked in the 2005 draft. Teahen opened this season at second base, his fourth different Opening Day position in as many years. Willie Bloomquist and Mitch Maier, who was called up last week from Class AAA Omaha, will share time in right until Jose Guillen comes off the disabled list.

PLAYER NEWS:

--2B Alberto Callaspo led off the second inning with his first big league home run off Tigers rookie RHP Rick Porcello. That ended a 441 at-bat homer-less drought, the longest among active major league players.

--3B Mark Teahen hit a two-run home run in the first to extend his hitting streak to six games. He is 7-for-19 in the streak.

--RHP Kyle Davies, who starts Saturday against the Tigers, is 1-4 with a 4.44 career ERA in five starts against Detroit. He lost all three starts in 2008 to the Tigers.

--RF Jose Guillen will likely be activated Saturday after running the bases. He has been taking batting practice. Guillen went on the disabled list after three games with a partially torn right hip flexor tendon.

--RHP Brian Bannister improved to 4-1 in his career against the Indians on Wednesday. He passed his father, LHP Floyd Bannister, in lifetime victories against the Indians. Floyd was 3-11 in 24 career starts vs. the Indians. Brian is 3-0 with a 1.44 ERA in four career starts at Cleveland.

MEDICAL WATCH:

OF Jose Guillen (torn right hip flexor tendon) went on the 15-day disabled list April 10. He expects to return on April 24.

RHP Doug Waechter (right elbow strain) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to April 18. He did not believe the injury was serious.

3B Alex Gordon (torn labral cartilage) went on the 15-day disabled list April 15. He had surgery April 16 and could be out until the All-Star break.

LHP John Bale (thyroid surgery on March 3) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 27. He pitched in extended spring training on April 22, and he might soon begin a minor league rehab assignment.
