Kansas City Royals Roster Report 2009-04-24

Kansas City Royals Roster Report 2009-04-24
With 3B Alex Gordon out for 10 to 12 weeks after having hip surgery, Mark Teahen will get the majority of the playing time at third base. Teahen came up as a third baseman, but shifted to the outfield to make room for Gordon, who was the second player picked in the 2005 draft. Teahen opened this season at second base, his fourth different Opening Day position in as many years. Willie Bloomquist and Mitch Maier, who was called up last week from Class AAA Omaha, will share time in right until Jose Guillen comes off the disabled list.

PLAYER NEWS:

--2B Alberto Callaspo, who is hitting .476 (10-for-21) in his past six games, was moved to the second slot in the order Thursday. He went 1-for-3 with a RBI double and a walk and is hitting .381. SS Mike Aviles, who snapped an 0-for-15 run with a sixth-inning single, was dropped to eighth in the lineup. Aviles is hitting .182.

--RHP Zack Greinke takes a 34-inning scoreless streak into a Friday night home start against the Tigers. He has 20 scoreless innings this season, including a shutout of the Rangers on Saturday, in winning his first three starts. He finished last season with 14 scoreless innings.

--LHP John Bale, who had thyroid surgery in March and began the season on the disabled list, threw 22 pitches Wednesday in an extended spring training game. If he has no setbacks, Bale likely would begin a minor league rehab assignment around May 1.

--RHP Brian Bannister improved to 4-1 in his career against the Indians on Wednesday. He passed his father, LHP Floyd Bannister, in lifetime victories against the Indians. Floyd was 3-11 in 24 career starts vs. the Indians. Brian is 3-0 with a 1.44 ERA in four career starts at Cleveland.

MEDICAL WATCH:

RHP Doug Waechter (right elbow strain) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to April 18. He did not believe the injury was serious.

3B Alex Gordon (torn labral cartilage) went on the 15-day disabled list April 15. He had surgery April 16 and could be out until the All-Star break.

OF Jose Guillen (torn right hip flexor tendon) went on the 15-day disabled list April 10. He expects to return as soon as he is eligible.

LHP John Bale (thyroid surgery on March 3) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 27. He pitched in extended spring training on April 22, and he might soon begin a minor league rehab assignment.
