Kansas City Royals Roster Report 2009-04-22

Kansas City Royals Roster Report 2009-04-22
With 3B Alex Gordon out for 10 to 12 weeks after having hip surgery, Mark Teahen will get the majority of the playing time at third base. Teahen came up as a third baseman, but shifted to the outfield to make room for Gordon, who was the second player picked in the 2005 draft. Teahen opened this season at second base, his fourth different Opening Day position in as many years. Willie Bloomquist and Mitch Maier, who was called up Friday from Class AAA Omaha, will share time in right until Jose Guillen comes off the disabled list, which will probably be this week.

PLAYER NEWS:

--RHP Sidney Ponson, who gave up six runs in 3 1/3 innings Tuesday, is 0-2 with a 7.04 ERA in three starts. In eight games, seven starts, at Cleveland, Ponson is 0-5 with a 10.06 ERA.

--RHP Brian Bannister was recalled from Class AAA Omaha and will start Wednesday. Bannister was 0-1 with a 3.46 ERA in three starts in the Pacific Coast League.

--LHP Horacio Ramirez, who was 0-1 with an 11.12 ERA in one start and two relief outings, will be moved to the bullpen to make room for RHP Brian Bannister in the rotation. "Horacio is not fired up about it," manager Trey Hillman said. "He wants to start, understandably. I don't blame him." Ramirez had been a starter most of his career before being used exclusively out of the bullpen last season. Ramirez worked 1 2/3 hitless innings Tuesday, walking one and striking out one, to lower his ERA to 8.59.

--RHP Doug Waechter was placed on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to Saturday with a lateral strain in his right elbow. Waechter gave up two home runs in one inning Friday in the Royals' 12-3 rout of the Rangers. He joins OF Jose Guillen, 3B Alex Gordon and LHP John Bale on the disabled list.

MEDICAL WATCH:

RHP Doug Waechter (right elbow strain) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to April 18. He did not believe the injury was serious.

3B Alex Gordon (torn labral cartilage) went on the 15-day disabled list April 15. He had surgery April 16 and could be out until the All-Star break.

OF Jose Guillen (torn right hip flexor tendon) went on the 15-day disabled list April 10. He is expected to return as soon as he is eligible.

LHP John Bale (thyroid surgery on March 3) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 27. When he regains his strength and stamina, he will be activated, but he likely will pitch at least one or two games on a minor league rehab assignment first.
