Kansas City Royals Roster Report 2009-04-14

Kansas City Royals Roster Report 2009-04-14
OF Jose Guillen is on the 15-day disabled list with a partially torn right hip flexor tear. In his absence, manager Trey Hillman has used Mark Teahen and Willie Bloomquist in right field. Teahen has already started at three different positions -- second, third and right and has been used at first base late in games. Teahen started a game at third when 3B Alex Gordon missed 2 1/2 games with a sore right hip. RHP Sidney Ponson's contract was purchased from Class AAA Omaha, and he is the Royals' No. 4 starter. Manager Trey Hillman used three right fielders and three third basemen in the first week because of the injuries to Guillen and Gordon.

PLAYER NEWS:

--RHP Zack Greinke extended his scoreless-inning streak to 25. He has not allowed a run since the sixth inning on Sept. 13 at Cleveland. Greinke has allowed nine hits in 11 scoreless innings this season in victories over the Indians and White Sox.

--RHP Joakim Soria picked up his fourth save in as many opportunities but had to work around runners on second and third with nobody out in the 4-2 victory. He struck out Victor Martinez and Jhonny Peralta and retired Travis Hafner on a comebacker. "I sure didn't like seeing that tying run get to second base after the wild pitch and the meat of their order coming up," Royals manager Trey Hillman said. "But Joakim did what he usually does. He doesn't let his heart rate get up there too much and got a couple of big strikeouts."

--C Miguel Olivo struck out in all three of his at-bats, bringing his total to 11 in 17 at-bats with no walks. Olivo's average sagged to .176.

--DH Mike Jacobs homered to lead off the fourth. It was his first home run for the Royals after hitting 32 last season for the Marlins.

--IF-OF Willie Bloomquist did not play Monday after making a diving eighth-inning catch Sunday against the Yankees in right field. "Willie is OK, but his body could use a little bit of a break from what he incurred yesterday, especially with the dive and the slide," Royals manager Trey Hillman said. "He's fine, but he's a little bit stiff." Mark Teahen started in right for the second time this season.

MEDICAL WATCH:

3B Alex Gordon (sore right hip) left the April 11 game and did not play April 12 or 13. He is expected to be back in the lineup April 14.

OF Jose Guillen (torn right hip flexor tendon) went on the 15-day disabled list April 10. He is expected to return as soon as he is eligible.

LHP John Bale (thyroid surgery on March 3) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 27. When he regains his strength and stamina, he will be activated, but he likely will pitch at least one or two games on a minor league rehab assignment first.
