--RHP Jamey Wright, who came to camp as a non-roster invitee, had his contract purchased Sunday and will be used as a long reliever. Wright was 8-7 with a 5.12 ERA in 75 relief appearances last season with the Texas Rangers. This is Wright's second tour with the Royals. He made four starts in 2003 with Kansas City. Wright was the only non-roster invitee to make the opening-day roster.
--OF Shane Costa, who had right wrist surgery last year, was designated for assignment. Costa, who hit .455 in 33 at-bats in spring training, was a 2003 second-round pick. In 155 games with Kansas City from 2005-07, he hit .254 with five home runs and 42 RBIs. --C Brayan Pena, who is out of minor league options, made the opening-day roster. While catching is Pena's best position, he also played third base and the outfield in spring training.
--SS Tony Pena Jr., who was the starting shortstop when last season began, made the team as a backup this year. After hitting a puny .169 with six extra-base hits in 95 games last year, Pena has eye surgery immediately after the season. He hit .275 in spring training with two home runs, which is one more than he hit in 2008. Pena lost his starting shortstop job to Mike Aviles.
--RHP Brandon Duckworth, who has appeared in 43 games, including 18 starts, the past three seasons with Kansas City, will begin the season in the Class AAA Omaha rotation. Duckworth was 3-3 with a 4.50 ERA in seven starts last year with the Royals.
--LHP Tim Hamulack, who has made 39 relief appearances in the majors with the Mets and Dodgers in 2005-06, was among the final cuts. He will start the season with Omaha.
