He hit .275 in spring training with two home runs, which is one more than he hit in 2008. Pena lost his starting shortstop job to Mike Aviles.
--RHP Brandon Duckworth, who has appeared in 43 games, including 18 starts, the past three seasons with Kansas City, will begin the season in the Class AAA Omaha rotation. Duckworth was 3-3 with a 4.50 ERA in seven starts last year with the Royals.
--LHP Tim Hamulack, who has made 39 relief appearances in the majors with the Mets and Dodgers in 2005-06, was among the final cuts. He will start the season with Omaha.
