Kansas City Royals Notes, Quotes 2009-03-01

Kansas City Royals Notes, Quotes 2009-03-01
--RHP Juan Cruz was signed to a two-year, $5.5 million contract with a club option of $4 million for 2011. Because Cruz is a Type A free agent, the Royals will have to give Arizona their second-round pick in the June draft.

--LHP John Bale is scheduled to undergo surgery Tuesday to have an overactive thyroid gland removed. Bale is expected to miss workouts for at least two weeks.

--OF Jose Guillen tested his tender right shoulder by throwing on Feb. 27. He has been restricted to being the designated hitter in one of the first three games, going 0-for-1 with a walk.

--RHP Zack Greinke threw two spotless innings Friday against the Giants in his spring training debut. "It was good for the first game, but still a lot of improvement needs to be made before the season starts 'cause that wouldn't work for six to eight innings, consistently," Greinke said. "I've got to be able to mix more pitches in and locate my fastball better when the season starts." Greinke threw only one curveball and no two-seam fastballs.

--LHP Horacio Ramirez retired only two of the 10 batters he faced in his first start Feb. 25, allowing six runs, three unearned after a throwing error by 2B Mark Teahen, in a loss to the Rangers. "He left too many pitches up and out over the plate, and these guys can always hit," manager Trey Hillman said. "You put them in Arizona, they hit even better. They took advantage of it."

--Cs Miguel Olivo and John Buck each hit home runs in their first at-bats of spring training.

--LHP Neal Musser, who was designated for assignment on Feb. 19 when the Royals claimed INF Tug Hulett on waivers from the Mariners, was released after clearing waivers. General manager Dayton Moore said the club has no interest to re-signing Musser to a minor league contract. "He's going to explore other options," Moore said.

--Bret Saberhagen, who is in the Royals Hall of Fame and won two Cy Young Awards, visited the Royals camp, but as an agent. He is an associate of the West Coast Sports Management firm, which is headed by Dan Evans, a former Dodgers general manager.

BY THE NUMBERS: 40.50 -- ERA of LHP Horacio Ramirez after the first spring training game.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "I am barred from the clubhouse unless it's the coaches' locker room. It is a little strange to be on the other side of the fence." -- Royals Hall of Famer Bret Saberhagen, who now is an agent.
