--OF Jose Guillen has been hampered in early workouts by an ingrown nail on his big right toe. Royals manager Trey Hillman sent Guillen back to the clubhouse Feb. 19 after conditioning drills, not wanting to worsen the toe. Guillen said he would not play for the Dominican Republic in the World Baseball Classic unless he is 100 percent healthy.
--RHP Oscar Villarreal has opted to remain in the Royals' camp instead of pitching for Mexico in the World Baseball Classic. Villarreal, who pitched in the 2006 WBC, has been in the majors with the Diamondbacks, Braves and Astros, but is in the Kansas City spring training on a minor league contract with a non-roster invite. "I want to make the team in Kansas City," Villarreal said. "Instead of being away for two or three weeks, I want to be here. It's tough for me (to say no), but it's how it is."
--LHP Neal Musser, who pitched one scoreless inning in his only major league appearance last year, was designated for assignment when the Royals claimed INF Tug Hulett on waivers. Musser, 28, has a 0-1 record with a 4.21 ERA in 18 career relief appearances.
--LHP John Bale has been restricted in early workouts because of stiffness in his upper back. Bale made three starts last season in April before going on the disabled list because of a stiff shoulder and then breaking his left hand, a self-inflicted wound. He did not return until September and was used strictly in relief.
BY THE NUMBERS: .491 -- Alberto Callaspo's batting average in day games last season.
QUOTE TO NOTE: "I'm excited about the day, but I don't have as many things floating around in my head as I did this time last year." -- Royals manager Trey Hillman on the first full-squad workout.
