--INF/OF Mark Teahen and the Royals agreed to a one-year, $3,575,000 contract, averting a potential arbitration hearing. He had sought $3.85 million, while the club had offered $3.05 million.
--RHP Brian Bannister avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year contract for $1,737,500. Bannister went 9-16 with a 5.76 ERA in 32 starts in 2008. --1B/DH Mike Jacobs and INF/OF Mark Teahen are the only remaining Royals who filed for arbitration and have not signed. The Royals have never had a player to go to an arbitration hearing since Dayton Moore became general manager on June 8, 2006.
--SS Tony Pena Jr. hit .275 with a .347 on-base percentage in 46 games in the Dominican winter league. Pena Jr. drew 15 walks. He has only 18 walks in 287 games in the majors the last three seasons.
--RHP Roman Colon, a non-roster invitee, went 0-1 with a 5.27 ERA in 17 relief appearances in the Dominican winter league. Colon was acquired from the Tigers in a July 13, 2007 trade.
--RF Jose Guillen needs 14 home runs in 2009 to reach 200. Interestingly, he has 93 home runs in the AL and 93 in the NL.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "Thanks for reminding me." -- General manager Dayton Moore on signing RHP Brett Tomko before spring training started. Tomko went 2-7 with a 6.97 ERA in 16 games, 10 of them starts, before being released on June 24.
