Kansas City Royals Inside Pitch 2009-05-06

Kansas City Royals Inside Pitch 2009-05-06
Right-hander Zack Greinke is pitching in extremely rarified air.

Greinke is 6-0 with a 0.40 ERA after shutting out the White Sox on Monday. Only two other pitchers in big-league history have won their first six starts of a season with an ERA lower than that -- Walter Johnson for the 1913 Senators (0.35 ERA) and Fernando Valenzuela for the 1981 Dodgers (0.33 ERA).

The Royals' attendance for the Monday game was 21,843 and was swollen by a walkup of more than 6,000. If Greinke continues this, could there a Zack-mania in Kansas City as there was Fernando-mania in Los Angeles.

"There won't be. I guarantee it," Greinke said Tuesday. "I saw stuff of the Fernando-mania, and that was just crazy. Last night was just a great game, but it wasn't in that class."

Greinke was selected the American League Pitcher of the Month for April, when he went 5-0 with a 0.50 ERA and struck out 44, leading the majors in all three categories.

"It's not easy to do," Greinke said to earn the honor. "I felt like I pitched good a couple times before and didn't get it. So it's pretty nice, it's not easy to do that. There's no way I would have got that without Mac (pitching coach Bob McClure) and (catcher Miguel) Olivo. Mac giving me a plan on how to pitch. Olivo making sure I do it each time. Mac has done a fantastic job. He deserves a lot of credit."

Greinke, who has a head start to repeat as the May honoree after blanking the White Sox, will start again Friday at Anaheim.

ROYALS 8, WHITE SOX 7 (11 innings): John Buck's two-out single in the 11th inning scored Mitch Maier, who had walked and advanced to third on Willie Bloomquist's single. Juan Cruz picked up the victory in relief, while Jamey Wright, the fourth Kansas City pitcher, worked three scoreless innings. Royals starter Kyle Davies worked four innings, plus one batter, for his shortest outing of the season, giving up six runs on eight hits, including home runs to Jermaine Dye and Josh Fields, but was bailed out by the offense, getting a no-decision.
