Gordon is not expected to return to the lineup until late June or early July after a minor league rehab assignment.
"You take all offseason to train and prepare for the season and then go all through spring training, and nothing comes up with the hip," Gordon said. "Opening day is when I felt it. I couldn't tell you exactly how it happened. It was cold and standing around for introductions and whatnot before the first pitch and it kind felt a little tight.
"When I hit my home run, I could feel it when I was going around the bases. After that, it kept getting worse and worse. It was very frustrating to try to play through it, but it was irritating and wasn't really fun to play through. Eventually it's something we needed to take care of."
After initially rehabbing in Vail, Colo., Gordon is doing his rehab work in Kansas City. It takes 3 1/2 to 4 hours a day.
"It is not really that painful," Gordon said. "My legs are a little weak just 'cause I was on crutches for a couple of weeks and didn't do a whole lot with my legs. I'm trying to strengthen it back up and getting some of the movement (back). It's not as flexible as it used to be, so we're trying to get it back to where it was."
ROYALS 3, WHITE SOX 0: Zack Greinke pitched his third complete game and his second shutout, holding the White Sox to six hits while striking out 10 and walking none. David DeJesus homered on an 0-2 pitch in the third. Billy Butler collected the Royals' other RBI with his single in the third, scoring Mark Teahen. The first Kansas City run in the second inning scored on a White Sox error.
