Royalshome.com | Kansas City Royals News, royals Scores, Game Recaps & Commentary - The Royals locked up Zack Greinke to a four-year contract in January, through the 2112 season, and it looks as if it will be money well spent.
Greinke is 3-0 with a 0.00 ERA in his first three starts, allowing 16 hits, walking five and striking out an American League-leading 26 in 10 innings. He tossed a seven-hit complete-game shutout Saturday at Texas. "That's about as good as it gets for three starts," Royals manager Trey Hillman said. "I wouldn't want to put a ceiling on him. I think Zack is going to be one of the premier pitchers in the major leagues for a long time. That's good for us and good for Zack Greinke."
Greinke's consecutive scoreless inning streak has reached a club-record 34, but with an asterisk. He has done it over two seasons, ending 2008 with 14 scoreless innings. RHP Kevin Appier tossed 33 consecutive scoreless innings, Aug. 28-Sept. 23, 1993, the club record for one season.
The major league record is 59 consecutive scoreless innings by Dodgers RHP Orel Hershiser.
"It's just about impossible to get to 34 nowadays," Greinke said. "Fifty-nine, that's impossible. I would have been happy with 20 as a career best, but 34; I don't know how that's happened. I would never have thought I would have come anywhere close to that."
Miguel Olivo has caught all three of Greinke's starts this season.
"I shook him off a couple of times and he said, 'no, not here,'" Greinke said. "He's been right with me. He's calling his game and it's working. I'm adjusting to his style. He calls the inside pitch more than I'm used to."
RANGERS 6, ROYALS 5: RHP Kyle Farnsworth threw only two pitches and the second to Michael Young wound up on the other side of the fence for a walk-off ninth inning home run. 1B Mike Jacobs hit a two-run homer, but also committed an eighth-inning error that lead to an unearned run and the Rangers scoring two runs to tie the score. CF David DeJesus had three of the Royals' nine hits, including a home run, and drove in two runs.
