Third baseman Alex Gordon was placed on the 15-day disabled list Thursday but is expected to be out much longer with a right hip labral cartilage tear.

Gordon, who injured the hip Saturday against the Yankees and sat out the next two games, will have arthroscopic surgery Friday performed by Marc Philippon in Vail. Colo. He is the same doctor who performed hip surgery on the Yankees' Alex Rodriguez.

Gordon was hitting just .095 (2-for-22) with eight strikeouts in seven games. He was 0-for-6 with four strikeouts in two games after trying to return from the injury.

With Gordon absent, manager Trey Hillman said he plans to play Mark Teahen mostly at third base. Teahen has also started at second base and right field this season. He shifted to right when Jose Guillen went on the disabled list, also with a right hip injury.

Outfielder Mitch Maier, a former first-round pick, was recalled from Class AAA Omaha, where he was hitting .370 with two home runs and nine RBIs in six games. Maier will join the club Friday in Texas, where the Royals open a six-game trip.

Maier, who bats left-handed, and Willie Bloomquist, who swings right-handed, likely will split time in right until Guillen comes off the disabled list.
