Mark Teahen's professional debut at second base was not what he or the club was hoping for or expecting.

The Royals are experimenting in spring training on moving Teahen to second base after incumbent Mark Grudzielanek filed for free agency and rejected arbitration. Teahen opened the 2006 season as the third baseman, 2007 in right field and 2008 in left field.

Teahen started at second base in the exhibition opener on Feb. 25 against the Rangers and committed two throwing errors in the first two innings. Another throw pulled first baseman Billy Butler off the bag on what could have been a double play.

"It's no point peaking on the first game of spring," Teahen joked. "I gave myself a little room to go up."

Teahen said he had not played second in seven years, since he was a sophomore in college.

"It's my first game there in awhile," he said. "I would have liked for it to go better, but at the same time it's not a big deal. It's always just catching back up to the speed of the game and, of course, doing it at a new position puts that much more on it.

"I just rushed a few plays, (but) for the most part it was good. It was nice I was able to play a few innings after that, so I could just feel a little more settled in."

Teahen's fielding miscues helped the Rangers score nine runs, three unearned, in the first two innings en route to a 12-7 victory.

"Nothing I saw with the mistakes he made is overly alarming to me," manager Trey Hillman said. "I wish he hadn't made them because of the outcome and because of the way it dominoed as far as the score goes early. There's a silver lining to the cloud, also. He's going to be smarter the next time he goes out there.

"That first error -- especially in a one-out situation early in the game -- I would just as soon see him get the out at first base and we've got two outs and a runner on second base. Next time, he's not going to make that same mistake in that same situation."

Teahen leaves Sunday to play third base for Canada in the World Baseball Classic.
