Hillman also moved David DeJesus, who usually bats leadoff, back into the third hole, which has been a black hole this season. DeJesus batted third twice last week at Texas.
"I changed it up a little bit," Hillman said. "See if we can generate a little offense with some different guys in there."
The result: a three-run outburst that was the team's second highest total in May, but it wasn't enough in a 5-3 loss to the Angels.
Guillen is in a 1-for-20 skid since an April 29 home run at Texas.
"I think Jose needs a little blow," Hillman said. "I think he needs a day to work on some things. Barney (hitting coach Mike Barnett) has been feverishly working, trying to help him make some adjustments. Barney thinks he might have clicked on something today. We looked at it earlier today on video, and he's going to work with him in the cage on that. We'll give him a day off to kind of take a step back."
ANGELS 5, ROYALS 3: Garret Anderson drove in all five Angels runs with three hits, including a three-run homer in the fourth off Brian Bannister that tied the score at 3-3. Bannister gave up five runs on 13 hits to take the loss. The Royals loaded the bases with one out in the seventh but failed to score when Mark Teahen struck out and Miguel Olivo popped up to the shortstop.
